It’s late summer and perhaps you’re reminiscing about your recent vacation, or you’re planning to get one in before fall.
Either way, vacations are wonderful experiences, don’t you agree?
So how is it that we enjoy vacations so much? Are they an escape from everyday living? Do you get to try new things that aren’t available to you at home? Perhaps you get a chance to meet new people or to visit old friends. Regardless of your reasons – and there may be others – each year you find yourself looking forward to your vacation.
But what if you could experience a vacation every day? Is that even possible?
Let’s look at the reasons one by one. First, you need to identify what it is you want to escape from in your daily life. Maybe you can’t change it – your job, for example – but you can change how you feel about it. Use your imagination! You can make a game out of difficult tasks, with built-in rewards when completed. Maybe try new ways of communicating with co-workers, taking walks at break time or enjoying lunches once a week.
Second, find something new to do in your home town. Feed your passion or find a new one! Rock climbing and cave exploring may be closer than you think. Maybe try to paint a still life or learn to play an instrument. Oftentimes libraries offer meeting places for book clubs, knitting groups, and quilting get-togethers.
Third, get out there and meet new people! Find a group with interests similar to yours. Volunteering is a great way to meet others. Political campaigning is another. Like to sing? Join a choir. And if you have the time and energy, try a part-time job. If you don’t have computer skills, they are easy to learn. Take a course online or at a local college. And with all the technology available today, it’s easier than ever to keep in touch with old friends as well as meet new friends.
What? You can’t find the time? That will be a topic for another blog.
